Hello friends, thanks for considering me for your next project 🙂
When I was a kid, my family would occasionally take the 45-minute drive to the nearest shopping mall in Rocky Mount NC. We lived in a small secluded town called Scotland Neck that was wonderfully boring. As a pre-teen, I lacked spending money of my own, so I developed a hobby of people-watching out of necessity. While my mom and siblings were exploring the bustling shops, I would find myself watching swarms of people with oversized bags advertising where they just blew their recent paychecks. It was the irl predecessor to the nature shows that I now enjoy. Yes, I know people aren’t animals, but there was something about human nature that I caught on to during those trips. There is a sameness about us as a species. There’s a comfortability that grows, even with complete strangers, as you watch them laugh with friends, do a little hobble-run towards someone they recognize across a store, and swing their bags like little kids waiting at a bus stop. I’ve carried this same fascination into my work as a videographer. Telling these little stories is a passion of mine and it’s driven by the curiosity of what makes us all unique, while maintaining an aspect of sameness. This space in between, where something is both uniquely fascinating and yet warmly familiar, is where beauty resides.
For most everything I film, I try to tell a story. I love discovering what makes a person tick and elaborating on it. There is ALWAYS a dynamic human behind every product, business, song, or concept. Outside of the natural world, everything we see around us is someone’s dream. Someone had a hair-brained idea and gave it a go. This is true from the pavement we drive on, to the little strands of book binding that holds someone’s words, to the coffee drink we order every morning. That’s so fascinating to me. I’m in awe of what humans have created and continue to invent. While we’re not all inventors, we all inadvertently impact one another everyday. My work is a way to say thank you to our interconnectedness as humans.
My favorite style of video is documentary. A good documentary has all the elements of a Hollywood masterpiece. It has a carefully selected cast of characters, a fascinating story launched with curiosity, and a timely message. There are endless stories, new and old, to be excavated from every town’s inhabitants. Capturing these stories is what drives me to work and be creative.
